Milk prices set to rise

Retail prices of ready-to-drink UHT and pasteurised milk are likely to increase by between one and 3.75 baht depending on size and packaging, following a recent increase in the prices paid to dairy farmers for raw milk. The Commerce Ministry is expected to finalise the prices today, based on the recommendations made at a meeting yesterday by a sub-committee in charge of dairy products chaired by Yanyong Phuangrach, the director-general of the Internal Trade Department.

Retail prices of UHT milk in a 250cc carton and pasteurised milk in a 200cc carton would be allowed to increase by one baht to 11.75 baht.

The price of an 850cc bottle would increase by 3.75 baht to 42 baht, with the 450cc bottle to increase by two baht to 24.50 baht, and a 250cc bottle to increase by 1.50 baht to 10.50 baht.

The cabinet last week approved increases in the ex-factory prices of raw milk by 3.50 baht per kilogramme to 18 baht.

Ministers acted after about 1,000 dairy farmers staged a rally on July 29 to demand higher prices to cover rising production and transport costs.
