POST REPORTERS

Pawitpol Bhaibulaya, senior marketing and sales manager of Loxley Plc, the equipment supplier for the traceability programme, uses a scanner that can read a radio frequency identification (RFID) tag to trace food origins. |
Charoen Pokphand Foods Plc (CPF) is working with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) to promote meat safety with a system that allows consumers to obtain more information on their purchases.
The two parties signed an agreement yesterday to build up confidence and convenience in the traceability of food products from CPF including chicken and pork, said CPF executive vice-president Teerasak Urunanon.
Under the deal, certified meat packages would carry a logo approved by the BMA. Consumers can trace the source online at www.bangkok.go.th/vet and www.vet-bma.com, or by sending a text message TM to 4545111.
CPF, the country's largest food producer and exporter, is the first company outside Europe to receive the Animal Welfare and Food Safety (ACP) standard from England.
The company also operates a laboratory capable of tracing raw materials for pre- and post-production.
The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) and the Thai Department of Livestock Development have chosen CPF's chicken farms as a pilot project to research a compartment system for the poultry industry.
Virachai Ratanabanchuen, another CPF executive vice-president, said the company provided a systematic record for tracing products backward the production process.
The finished products are packaged, frozen and distributed as chilled and frozen meat products to consumers in leading stores including 350 branches of CP Fresh Mart nationwide.
The meat traceability system is an innovation deriving from co-operation between the BMA and the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce.
The programme seeks to promote consumer and producer awareness of hygienic meat production.
