Dave’s Thai connection

The Sperlings: Ben, Dao, Shannon and Dave

"I moved to Thailand in 1988. I was teaching in Japan and got burned out after living and teaching in the city of Tokyo. I wanted a change, so I took a vacation around the time of Songkran in Thailand for about three weeks. I fell in love with the country and thought ‘I need a change! I’m moving to Thailand.’

Wedding day in Chiang Mai

"So I went and moved here (Chiang Mai) in 1988 and I lived here and I met my soon-to-be wife and a year after, we married. I spent the first year just living here, dating her and then I married and we went on to Japan, had a working honeymoon together – I taught English and she studied Japanese. At the end of the honeymoon, she was pregnant.

We decided that Japan was not the place for our child to be born so we moved back to Thailand and there we stayed for two years. My son was born here in ’91 and then in ’92 we moved back to the United States.

In the beginning (in Chiang Mai) I had a lot of fun. I studied Thai – I took courses at AUA. I studied a bit about the history, especially of northern Thailand and I traveled. And then eventually money started running low, so I decided to teach English. I taught a bit at Chiang Mai University. I was also an AUA teacher a couple of years here."
