The government has set aside 50 million baht in emergency funding for every province which is hit by typhoon Ketsana, which is now heading towards Thailand, Interior Minister Chavarat Charnvirakul said on Tuesday.

The death toll from Ketsana in the Philippines has soared to at least 240 people, and more than 170,000 people in Vietnam have been evacuated as the typhoon approaches its coastline.

Emergency agencies had prepared preventive and supportive measures for people in the North and Northeast, as the typhoon could hit both regions, Mr Chavarat said.

Each typhoon-hit province could ask for an immediate emergency budget of 50 million baht, he said.

My changwat is in the Northeast and it rains almost every day. Big news! It's the rainy season. Later this week, the rains and wind will be stronger, most likely due to the coming typhoon.

Should the residents get ready for a 50 million baht windfall (no pun intended) to improve conditions in the province. Actually, during the last big storm, roads and levees washed away and, if not for the voluntary labor of the residents, homes and perhaps some lives could have been lost.

It's a nice read and makes one believe the government has foresight, benevolence and is willing to help should disaster strike. That said, I remember what my grandpa said, "nothing is free". What strings (interest, Etc.) are attached to the money? Will the government be accused of vote buying? Something is wrong with this picure. I just can't figure out what.

Wow.... This announcemnt is made even before "Ketsana" hit Thailand??
I guess now there will be many many provinces in need of emergency funds and many provinces will be directly or indirectly hit by the typhoon. (surly more then expected):)
