Media groups rally for freedom of press

Two media worker groups on Friday urged the government to respect freedom of the press and freedom of expression as it marked the UN's World Press Freedom Day.

The Thai Journalists Association (TJA) and the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) made four significant requests for the government and media outlets on the day.

First, they urge the government to uphold and defend press freedom and make state agency information more easily accessible with prompt responses, particularly when the media requests confirmation or verification of information regarding government initiatives. They also urge the government to be receptive to criticism from the public and media and to maintain an open mind.

Secondly, the TJA and NUJ said the media is suffering numerous difficulties, such as layoffs and economic challenges, and they call on the government to offer assistance with this matter.

With the third concern, they called on the government to uphold citizens' freedom of speech, particularly the public's ability to plan nonviolent protests. Officials from the government are not allowed to intimidate the people or the media in any way, including by taking legal action against them.

Their fourth request asked the media organisations to conduct themselves professionally and responsibly, adhering to ethical standards.

Meanwhile, Spencer Anderson, deputy spokesperson of the US Embassy in Bangkok, told the press on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day that it is essential to reflect on the crucial role that a free and independent press plays in shaping societies, not only in Thailand but around the world.

Mr Anderson said the event also underscores the fundamental importance of reliable, accurate information in fostering democracy, promoting accountability, and advancing human rights.

In an era characterised by the rapid spread of misinformation and disinformation, the role of the press in providing verified facts and holding power to account has never been more critical, he said.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) designated May 3 as World Press Freedom Day as a reminder for government bodies and society to be aware of the importance of freedom of the press and respect and uphold the right to freedom of expression.
